FAQs
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a mandatory annual contribution of 2.5% on qualifying wealth that has been in your possession for one Islamic year.
Zakat purifies wealth and supports those in need, including the poor, needy, and debtors.
You must include:
- Cash in hand
- Bank account balances
- Gold and silver (jewelry included if eligible)
- Business inventory
- Investments & shares
- Money lent to others (receivable amounts)
- Savings in prize bonds or committees
- Livestock like goats, sheep, cows and camels (Nisab for this is different)
- Agricultural output (It is called Ushr)
You do NOT pay Zakat on:
- Personal house
- Personal car
- Household furniture
- Personal use items
- Business equipment (if not for resale)
If you prefer to calculate manually, use this formula:
Total Zakatable Assets – Short-term Liabilities = Net Zakatable Wealth
Then:
Net Zakatable Wealth × 2.5% = Zakat Payable
Example:
If your total Zakatable wealth is Rs. 1,000,000
Zakat = 1,000,000 × 2.5% = Rs. 25,000
Zakat must be paid by the one who is:
- Muslim
- Major (Baligh)
- Sane
- Sahib-un-nisaab (owner of wealth above the level of nisab)
If all of the above apply, you have to pay 2.5% Zakat on all of your savings and other applicable assets.
Zakat is calculated on net wealth after deducting immediate liabilities.
The Zakat rate is fixed at 2.5% annually.
“Alms (here it means Zakat) are meant only for the poor, the needy, those who administer them, those whose hearts need winning over, to free slaves and help those in debt, for God’s cause, and for travelers in need. This is ordained by God; God is all knowing and wise.” (Quran 9:60)
Here are the eight categories of recipients of Zakat:
- The poor (Fuqara)
- The needy (Masakeen)
- Collectors of Zakah (Al-‘Aamileen)
- Friends of the Islamic community and/or revert Muslims (Al-Mu’allafatu-Al- Quloob)
- The cause of (freeing) the slaves (Ar-Riqaab)
- Debtors (Gharimeen)
- The way of Allah SWT (fi Sabilillah)
- Wayfarer (Ibn-us-sabil)
Zakat only becomes obligatory once a full lunar year has passed, providing that your qualifying wealth has been held for one full year. Your Zakat year therefore starts on the date your wealth first equaled or exceeded the Nisab and should be calculated on that date for each subsequent year.
Although you can give Zakat at any time of year many Muslims choose to pay their Zakat during the Holy month of Ramzan. This is because the rewards and blessings of giving in this month are far greater than at any other time of the year.
